Tales from the Bench: How We Rescued a Frozen Surface Book from Wave Browser & Bloatware
Here at Indy Laptops, every day on the tech bench brings a new puzzle. Recently, an unnamed customer brought in their Microsoft Surface Book feeling frustrated—it had slowed down to a total crawl. Clicking on a web browser felt like moving through quicksand, and unwanted pop-ups kept hijacking the screen.
When we booted it up to take a look, the system was choking under the weight of several unwanted programs.
The Diagnosis: A Recipe for System Sluggishness
Opening Task Manager revealed a classic combination of persistent bloatware and browser hijackers:

Why drop third-party antivirus suites like McAfee?
Heavy Resource Drain: Modern third-party suites eat up massive amounts of RAM and CPU cycles. On lightweight devices like a Microsoft Surface, this causes severe system lag.

The Tech Bench Battle: How We Fixed It
Removing deeply embedded malware isn't as simple as clicking "uninstall." When a computer is this bogged down, standard Windows utility windows often freeze up entirely. Here is how we tackled the job:

Drive Health Integrity Check: Rule number one on our bench is to test the physical hard drive/SSD first. Running diagnostics ensured the slowness was purely software-related and not a failing drive.

Process Explorer to Freeze Rogue Tasks: Standard Task Manager was struggling, so we launched Sysinternals Process Explorer to identify, isolate, and forcefully kill the rogue processes locking up CPU resources.

First-Pass Cleaners (CCleaner & Malwarebytes): Once the system could breathe, we ran CCleaner to dump junk caches and Malwarebytes to strip away active adware hooks and browser hijackers.

These custom scripts dive deep into system registries, sweep away hidden leftover files, reset compromised network settings, and execute Windows system file repair commands (sfc and DISM) to fix any damaged OS files.

The deep cleanup and Windows repair process took several hours of continuous script runs and automated sweeps, but by the end of the evening, the Surface was running smooth, fast, and completely virus-free.

The Problem
A customer from Fishers brought in a MacBook Air that had stopped working after a spill. They had already taken it to a "Big Box" store, where they were told the laptop was a total loss and that they needed to buy a brand new one for over $1,000.
The customer wasn't ready to give up on their files or their wallet, so they brought it to Indy Laptops for a second opinion.
The Diagnosis
At Indy Laptops, we don't just swap parts; we diagnose the actual circuit board. We opened the MacBook and found corrosion near the main power delivery circuit on the logic board. This corrosion was preventing the laptop from charging or turning on.
The Solution
Instead of throwing the whole motherboard away (which costs hundreds of dollars), our technicians performed a component-level repair.

We replaced two small burnt capacitors using micro-soldering techniques.
The Result
The MacBook turned on immediately! The customer got their laptop back in 48 hours for a fraction of the cost of a new machine.
